Glider enjoys team-building fun in Barcelona

Glider’s team away day in Barcelona

Glider recognises that behind every successful company is a great team! Which is why the company thinks of exciting ways to reward its employees for their efforts. Team Glider took an entertaining trip to the cosmopolitan capital of Catalonia. Everyone bonded as a team, experienced Spanish culture and shared plenty of memorable moments and laughs.

Day 1

On the first day of the trip, the team arrived around midday in time to enjoy a beautiful three-course meal on the marina. This was followed by an eventful team GPS tablet challenge and an afternoon of exploration. The day was topped off with a fabulous Flamenco dinner and show in the evening.

Day 2

On Saturday, the team started the day by sharing a breakfast together. This was followed by a Catamaran Boat Cruise where they took in the breath-taking vistas of the Mediterranean sea. After enjoying canapes and lunch onboard, they were able to discover the Catamaran Docks before returning home.

Company culture

Glider prides itself on being a progressive company. Not just in terms of technical innovation, but also in its company culture. Glider is a fully remote business, giving its employees the flexibility to work from home. The team agrees that this makes the time they share out of office all the more meaningful. Additionally, memorable work trips such as this ensure that the team make personal connections. These may not necessarily be made when working in an office.

Nick Hutchinson, Managing Director of Glider, commented: “At Glider, we definitely believe in working hard and playing hard! This is why we have taken this two-day trip together. We run a completely remote business, which makes times like these even more precious.”

Glider acknowledges the importance of a healthy work-life balance. The company offers its employees competitive advantages such as enjoyable recreational experiences and remote working. Home working is part of Glider’s environmental policy. As well as being instrumental in its actions as a socially responsible business, Glider’s employees’ health and wellbeing is a priority.

Glider wins CABE digital transformation award 2022

The awards, hosted by Iranian-born British comedian and author Shappi Khorsandi, were announced during the prestigious gala dinner at the Embedding Sustainability Conference on 13 October 2022 in Newport.

The CABE Built Environment awards are a benchmark of industry standards, giving building engineers the recognition for excellence and ingenuity that they deserve. Following its demonstration of an exceptional usage of digital technologies on the HMP Five Wells construction project, Glider has been awarded this year’s CABE Digital Transformation Award, which reflects the increasing pace of change in use of digital technologies within construction.

Glider was recognised at the awards for the implementation of its Common Data Environment (CDE) platform, gliderbim®, on the HMP Five Wells project. On this project, Glider supported the client Kier, delivering to the Ministry of Justice’s (MoJ) requirements. This venture involved one of the largest data sets Glider has worked on to date.

Lord John Lytton, Chair of the CABE Awards panel, commented “The prison’s unique design has extensive asset information requirements, and by adapting cutting edge digital technologies, the project is able to manage all of the data points, improving the safety and efficiency of the building. The use of gliderbim® for the extremely complex HMP Five Wells project demonstrates just what can be achieved when you adopt BIM and digital twins”.

HMP Five Wells is an adult male Category C resettlement prison designed to enhance rehabilitation. Built almost entirely from standardised components and project managed by Mace, the 60,000m2 facility is now the biggest prison in England. On this substantial project, the use of gliderbim® enabled high quality and complete handover information for HMP Five Wells. Glider’s information management team were responsible for successfully overseeing the information capture across 79 work packages, from 49 trade contractors, and verifying in excess of 2.5 million data points from 380,000 COBie records.

Processing the level of data provided on the project would not have been possible without the unique data management capabilities of gliderbim® and Glider’s skilled information managers and consultants.

Nick Hutchinson, Managing Director of Glider commented, “We are immensely proud to have won the CABE Digital Transformation Award. This award represents the exceptional impact and innovation that gliderbim® and our consultancy services bring to the industry; of which HMP Five Wells is just one example. A huge congratulations to the whole Glider and Kier team for their hard work on this project.”

Glider awarded prestigious Digital Outcomes 6 contract

This is yet another remarkable achievement for Glider, as the information management and software specialist is awarded the Digital Outcomes 6 (RM 1043.8) contract, commencing on 10 August 2022.

The Crown Commercial Service, as the contracting authority has put in place a pan-government collaborative framework agreement for use by UK-based public sector organisations with Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) roles, and end-to-end digital transformation programmes, and has elected Glider as a supplier.

The new framework Digital Specialists & Programmes (RM6263) will be utilised by Central Government Departments, as well as all other public sector bodies, including local authorities, health, police, fire, rescue, education and the devolved administrations, to find a full range of Digital Data and Technology (DDaT) skills. The agreement offers a quality assured route. Therefore, it will provide larger digital transformation and larger capability programmes, as well as a route to market for strategic objectives or scope of services with no clearly defined outcomes or deliverables that will enable digital transformation.

Stuart Bell, Director of Sales & Marketing at Glider, commented on the awarded contract: “This is another milestone that recognises Glider’s exceptional digital capabilites. We are honoured to have secured a position on another public sector framework, in addition to our existing G-Cloud Digital 12 Marketplace contracts with clients such as the Ministry of Defence (MOD), British Antarctic Surveys (BAS)and the National Health Service (NHS). I would like to say thank you to the whole team for their hard work in achieving this high-status contract”.

Digital outcomes suppliers can help research, test, design, build, release, iterate, support or retire a digital service. Suppliers must comply with the government Technology Code of Practice, which sets out mandatory practices such as using open source technology, making privacy integral and integrating the technology within the organisations infrastructure, and adapting it to future demands.

Digital outcomes suppliers must also understand what it means to work on one of the Discovery, Beta, Live or Retirement phases, comply with successful Service Standard assessments, ensure that services are interoperable, and comply with adopted open standards as per government mandates.

Stuart Bell continued: “The process of attaining a government contract is highly rigorous, so the fact that Glider is compliant with these criteria is a testament to our high standard of data security, interoperability, accessibility and integration. We believe in creating a sustainable, digitally powered built environment, and are well-positioned to help our public sector clients manage their built asset information.”

Glider’s digital solutions empower its client’s teams to manage their data and exploit it for their organisational needs. Glider gains Cyber Essentials Plus certification

Safeguarding sensitive information

Glider’s flagship product gliderbim® is an intelligent information management platform which supports the whole asset data lifecycle, from conceptual design through to the operation and maintenance of buildings. As a software provider which hosts sensitive project and asset information, Glider pledges to always keep data secure.

Nick Hutchinson, Managing Director of Glider, commented on the certification: “This is yet another accreditation that demonstrates Glider’s commitment to cyber security. This certification reassures our existing clients that we have a strong defence against cyber attacks, and will let new clients know that their data is in safe hands with Glider. I can’t thank the team enough for their dedication to cyber security and gaining this certification.”

The Cyber Essentials certification is a government-backed scheme, designed to protect organisations from cyber attacks. The certification ensures that organisations have fundamental safeguards in place to protect themselves from cyber attacks. The Cyber Essentials Plus is the consecutive certification, verifying that organisations are protected against cyber attack via an in-depth technical assessment.

Obtaining this level of certification reassures clients of a business’ secure infrastructure, and allows a business to gain a clear picture of its cyber security level. Significantly, organisations aiming to bid for central government contracts which involve handling sensitive and personal information or the provision of certain technical products and services, will require a Cyber Essentials Certification.

“The Cyber Essentials Plus certificate reaffirms our data defence strategy to existing clients, including the Ministry of Defence (MOD), Ministry Of Justice (MOJ) and National Health Service (NHS) and will be important to the future of securing public sector contracts,” added Nick Hutchinson.

Glider takes on Four Peaks Challenge

Scaling new heights

Nick Hutchinson, Co-founder and Managing Director of Glider, and Stuart Bell, Director of Sales and Marketing, recently completed the Four Peaks Challenge in support of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity. As an asset lifecycle software provider for the built environment, Glider was honoured to support the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity in its worthy cause.

The construction industry is an integral part of our society, and yet many suffering construction workers go unnoticed. Every year there are over 84,000 cases of work-related illness that can be directly attributed to working in construction. The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity is the only charity that provides emotional, physical and financial wellbeing support of construction workers and their families. The charity receives no public funding and relies on the generosity of those within in the industry to help them continue their work in aiding unwell construction workers.

The Four Peaks Challenge was designed by the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity to help raise awareness and funds for those facing challenges within the construction industry. The formidable challenge entailed climbing to the summit of four of the UK’s highest mountains: Ben Nevis (1,345m), Helvellyn (950m), Snowdon (1,085m), and Carrauntoohil (1,038m), within a 48 hour window between 12-14 May 2022.

Nick and Stuart’s impressive efforts helped to raise over £3,000 by climbing to the four peaks. Currently, over £82,000, has been generously donated in aid of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity and their vital work.

Nick and Stuart joined 41 other members on the epic challenge from the organisations including Clancy, Careys, Blue Machinery Spares, Designer Group, JSP Safety, FKG Group, CSA Group, Entex Projects, Georoof, Falcon Green and buildspace.

Following the heroic achievement, the Gallagher Group Ltd and Glencar Construction hosted a gala dinner, which the Glider team had the honour of attending in celebration of their achievements. Although the challenge has been completed, you can still support the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity. To donate to the noble cause, please visit the Lighthouse Club 4 Peaks Challenge donation page.
