Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) is an Open Data schema specifically developed for the construction industry by buildingSMART which facilitates the exchange of 3D geometry and structured information. Imported and exported by a wide range of industry software, IFC is a highly interoperable choice for collaborating around designs, enabling construction processes and analysis, and can also be used post-handover as a key part of the digital estate.
Whilst an IFC is not a digital twin alone, a well specified and validated IFC model can form a key element of a digital twin strategy.
